Cal-mag calcium and magnesium supplement for children

Why do we recommend GNLD Cal-mag for your child?

  • Your child's body will use more of this supplement so you need less. The Calcium and Magnesium in Cal-mag are Calcium Glycinate and Magnesium Glycinate.  GNLD combined them with glycine, a natural amino acid in a process called Chelation.  Our bodies recognise amino acid chelated minerals a lot easier than other forms.  (For example, The difference is an average absorption rate of 22% for Calcium Carbonate, the form of Calcium most often used, versus 80% for Calcium Glycinate.)

  • 2:1 ratio with Magnesium means more Calcium is usable, and less excess Calcium in the bloodstreamThe presence of Magnesium is directly related to how well your child's body (and yours of course) will use the Calcium they take in.  Too little Magnesium means less of your Calcium gets used.  And excess Calcium in the bloodstream has been linked with increased risk of kidney stones and calcification of soft tissue.   See our article on why the 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Magnesium is so important for your health.

  • Cal-mag is very soluble so you're sure to get the promised dosage. Some mineral supplements are so tightly glued together that they don't even dissolve in your stomach.  You can test your supplement by stirring it in a half glass of vinegar - if it doesn't dissolve within 30 minutes its no good.  We tried and GNLD Cal-mag dissolved in less than 2 minutes!

  • Amino acid chelated minerals are much easier on your bowels.  Calcium and magnesium supplements are inclined to cause constipation or diahorrea, depending on the particular form.  Calcium Glycinate and Magnesium Glycinate won't have that effect.

Who needs Cal-mag?

  • If you are pregnant:

    • Calcium and Magnesium both play a role in preventing preeclampsia.

    • Calcium has been shown in several studies to lower the risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension if taken from the 20th week of pregnancy until you give birth.(1)

    • The additional magnesium will cure the pregnancy leg cramps that are most often related to a deficiency of magnesium

  • If you or your child are picky eaters who don't eat wholegrains, nuts, tofu, legumes and green leafy vegetables regularly, as these are the best dietary sources of Magnesium.

  • If you are prone to kidney stones.  In animals, a quick way to produce kidney stones is to put them on a magnesium-deficient diet.  Lower levels of magnesium in the blood cause the kidneys to excrete more calcium.  Higher levels of magnesium not only make calcium more soluble in the urine (helping to prevent kidney stone formation), it also lowers the amount of calcium released into the urine in the first place. What does Cal-mag contain?

  • High purity Calcium Carbonate from an organic source (eggshells), combined with glycine, a natural amino acid to form Calcium Glycinate.

  • Magnesium combined with glycine to form Magnesium Glycinate.

  • About 80% of Magnesium Glycinate is likely to be used by your body.

  • Each tablet provides:

Calcium Glycinate

100mg

Magnesium Glycinate

50mg

How much do you need?

Although the RDA for Calcium is 1000mg for adults and 1200mg for pregnant women, if you are eating a healthy diet, you will receive a large portion of Calcium from your diet.  Additionally, Calcium Glycinate is much better absorbed than most forms of Calcium found in other supplements (see our article comparing the bioavailability of Calcium supplements)

Magnesium Glycinate has a similar absorption rate.

Are the tablets easy to give to a child?

For children who can't swallow tablets, Cal-mag crushes easily in a mortar and pestle and can be added to milk, milky drinks and porridgy breakfast cereal.

Later, your child will swallow Cal-mag - give them plenty of water to wash it down.
